Discipleship Call's Statement on Atheism
I was raised in the faith, making my committment to Christ at a young age. I was the child of two Sunday School teachers and the grandchild of another but like many children, I drifted from the faith as a teen. I dabbled in the occult and when the new wore off I lived the life of what Pastor Greg Groeschel calls "practical atheism." I didn't necessarily stop believing in God but I lived life as if He weren't part of it. I tell you all this to make the point that I do understand how people can get so caught up in life that they either make no time for God or reject the concept outright.
As Christians we must understand that their are different classifications of people who claim to be atheist. There are those who can be called "strong atheist," these are the ones who will very firmly tell you that there is no God. There are also those who can be called "weak atheist," these are the ones claim not to believe in God but really just don't give God much thought, in their day to day life. We also have a third category that could be called the "militant atheist," these are the more vocal proponents of atheism. The Militants seem to hate God and Christianity more so than simply not believing.
Atheism violates nearly every aspect of our Christian faith, however we cannot return hate for hate. That is what they expect and even what they hope for. Atheist can yell, scream and wish for the annihilation of Christianity. They will call us immoral, bigots, simpletons, war-mongers ... you name it, but the moment you lower yourself to return insults, you will become the bad guy.
When confronted by an Atheist we must always remember that God loves them as much as He does you and I. Its unlikely that you will change an atheist with your words; they already have the opinion that Christianity is about empty words and promises. What will make the greatest impact is your love.
Remember, Satan is our enemy, not the lost. It is not the Atheist that we battle with.
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12
Always stayed armed for spiritual battle:
"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds" 2 Corinthians 10:4
